Small milk jugs like these are commonly used in coffee shops today to hold a second shot of espresso. So why do baristas sometimes have to make two shots of espresso at the same time, even though they only ordered one?

The fact is that espresso prepared with a double portafilter is much tastier than espresso prepared with a single portafilter. That is, coffee for two servings is placed in the portafilter and two shots of espresso are pulled. And in those cases when one espresso is ordered, one shot can be pulled into a cup for the customer, and the second into this small milk jug. The barista serves one espresso to the customer, and the other, the one in the milk jug, can then be used (as soon as possible) for the next order. Such espresso can be used to prepare drinks such as cappuccino, bumble, iced coffee and so on.
So a small milk jug is a very useful piece of coffee shop equipment.

Why is the vessel now used for the “extra” espresso called a pitcher, a milk jug, a cream jug, a creamer and so on? Because it was originally designed and used as a vessel for serving milk and cream with coffee. Nowadays, the most common way to serve coffee is as a ready-made drink in a takeaway cup. Previously, coffee was usually served in a cup, with cream, milk and water served alongside in small jugs. But this way of serving is rare nowadays. That is why the milk jug moved from the guest’s table in the coffee shop to the bar, where it became a barista’s helper. Still, in coffee shops and at home, when coffee is served the classic way, milk, cream and water are still served in milk jugs.

Small milk jugs can also be used at home as pitchers for frothing a small amount of milk for one serving. We do NOT recommend doing this, because the 100 ml volume is very small and the milk simply splashes out. Special vessels, pitchers, are used for frothing milk. They have a larger volume, a special shape and a pointed spout. We also have pitchers in our range, so please get in touch: we will be happy to help you choose a pitcher for your home or coffee shop. Or, at home, try this life hack: you can use an ordinary deep cup to froth a small amount of milk. For the milk to froth well and not overheat, both the cup and the milk must be chilled.
