What is drip coffee and why you should try this method at home

Drip coffee is a type of filter coffee, one of the most popular ways to make coffee these days. Unlike traditional brewed coffee, filter coffee is brewed through a special paper filter, which allows for a cleaner, lighter, and more balanced coffee flavor.

The popularity of filter coffee is explained by several important advantages. Firstly, this method allows you to better control the extraction process, which affects the taste of the drink. Filtration helps to get rid of bitterness and excessive acidity, which often appear during traditional coffee brewing. As a result, we get a rich, soft and aromatic drink. Secondly, filter coffee is easier to brew: just install the filter, pour coffee into it and pour water through the coffee, wait until it slowly filters through, and voila, filter coffee is ready! This method does not require special skills or complex equipment, which makes it ideal for making at home.

Another important advantage of such coffee is the preservation of the quality and freshness of the drink for a longer time, compared to traditional coffee. Unlike traditional coffee, which quickly loses its aroma, taste, and begins to bitter, filter coffee can preserve its taste for a longer time. This is due to the fact that filtering separates the drink from the sediment, which quickly oxidizes and spoils the taste. Thus, the time of consumption of the drink is significantly increased, because it tastes both fresh hot and in a colder version.

What is drip coffee?

Drip coffee is a type of filter coffee preparation, which consists in the fact that ground coffee is immediately packed in a bag of filter paper at the factory, and hermetically packed in a plastic bag. When preparing, the drip bag is placed on a cup, water is poured over the coffee and the drink is ready.
This method of making coffee has gained popularity all over the world and is widely used due to the simplicity and convenience of preparation and the fact that such a drip bag is convenient to take with you when traveling.

The history of drip coffee dates back 30 years ago in Japan. At that time, due to the fast pace of life and lack of time, people were looking for a convenient and quick way to make coffee at home or at work. It was then that the company UCC Ueshima Coffee patented the design of special drip bags, which simplified and accelerated the process of brewing a drink. These bags were small bags made of filter paper, in which a portion of ground coffee was packed.

Due to its simplicity, speed, and ability to control the brewing process, drip coffee quickly gained popularity in Japan and later around the world. This preparation method expanded the possibilities of preparing a balanced, aromatic, and rich drink at home and anywhere without the need for complex equipment: all you need is a packet of drip coffee and hot water.

What you need to make drip coffee

To enjoy the rich taste and aroma of drip coffee at home, you will need a minimum of equipment and ingredients:
1. A kettle with adjustable water heating temperature. It is desirable (but not critical) that this kettle has a narrow spout, like kettles for making pourover coffee. If you are brewing coffee on the go and there is no way to boil water, you can prepare a thermos with hot water in advance, which you will pour into the drip.
2. Water: 180 – 200 ml of high-quality clean filtered water, which should be heated in a kettle, but not brought to a boil, the temperature should be between 94 – 96 ℃.
3. A bag of drip coffee – the coffee is already measured for one serving and ground accordingly.

With everything you need, you can easily make unrivaled coffee at home or anywhere – on the go, in nature, at work. The main thing is to follow the preparation recommendations.

How to brew coffee in drip bags

Here is a step-by-step guide to help you make the perfect drip coffee.

Heat the water. The optimal temperature for brewing drip coffee is 92-96°C. Do not let the water boil, as this can negatively affect the taste characteristics of the drink.

Meanwhile, while the water is heating, prepare the drip bag for brewing: remove it from the airtight plastic packaging, tear off the top of the drip along the perforation line to open it, then place the drip bag on the cup using the cardboard “legs” along the drip bag.
When the water is hot, pour it through the drip. Do this in small portions, in several passes, taking care to evenly moisten the entire mass of coffee. The total brewing time should be about 2.5 – 4 minutes. Usually this is done in 3 – 4 passes: you need to pour water into the drip and wait for it to flow into the cup, and so on 3 – 4 times until you have poured all 200 ml of water.
After that, carefully remove the drip bag from the cup and throw it away. That’s it, your drip coffee is ready and ready to drink. If you like a colder drink, just wait a couple of minutes for the drink to cool down.
Bon appetit!

Benefits of drip coffee

Drip coffee is becoming increasingly popular among coffee lovers due to the many benefits it offers. First of all, this brewing method provides an unrivaled taste of the drink. Unlike immersion methods, drip coffee avoids the formation of bitter and sour notes, as well as unwanted sediment in the cup. The coffee comes out extremely clean and balanced in taste.

In addition, drip coffee is considered more beneficial for health, as it contains less caffeine and other substances that can negatively affect the body if consumed excessively. This brewing method allows you to maximally preserve all the beneficial properties of coffee beans.

An equally important advantage of filter coffee is its ease of preparation. The simple basic equipment for preparation is a kettle (or thermos) and a cup.
In short: making filter coffee takes only a few minutes and does not require complicated manipulations. This makes it possible to prepare delicious coffee at home, at work or even while traveling without spending a lot of time and effort.
