Huehuetenango is the highest non-volcanic region of Guatemala, which is one of the best in the country for coffee production. The local Kuchumatanes Mountains are the highest non-volcanic massif in Central America, making the area one of three coffee regions where trees do not grow in volcanic soil.

It is worth noting that the region borders Mexico, so dry and hot winds from the Mexican plains protect the region from frost. This allows the coffee to grow at high altitudes.

Because Huetenango is a hard-to-reach and remote region, it has almost no centralized processing stations. Farmers process coffee themselves, and rivers allow them to place the processing station anywhere. The berries are dried in the sun and then sold.
